Law Fellow Program 2009

The Law Fellow Program selection committee met on April 10, 2009 to select this year’s fellows.  The process was highly competitive but after careful consideration, the following persons were selected to participate in the program:

Nicole Chong: 

Ms Chong is a first year law student at Florida State University College of Law.  Her expected graduation date is May 2011.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from New York University, Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York, N.Y., and received an Advanced Spanish Studies Certificate from Universidad de Antonio Nebrija, Madrid Spain in 2008. She is a member of the Black Law Student Association and volunteers her time tutoring students in poor communities.  Ms Chong is interested in police misconduct cases.

Noele Hosley:

Ms Hosley is a second year law student at Southern New England School of Law, North Darmouth, Massachusetts.  Her expected graduation date is May 2010.  She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland in 2003. She interned at the Public Defender’s Office in Baltimore, Maryland and Justice Policy Institute in Washington, D.C.  Ms. Hosley served as Black Law Student President and is a member of the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston.   Her favorite Supreme Court case is Brown v. Board of Education.  She is interested in pursuing equal protection, employment discrimination and improper search and seizure cases.    

Noah Grabisch:

Mr. Grabisch is a first year law student at Boston College of Law, Chestnut Hill, MA.  His expected graduation date is May 2011.  Mr. Grabisch received his undergraduate degree in African American Studies from the University of Maryland.  He is a member of the Black Law Student and Jewish Law Student Associations.   Mr. Grabisch’s favorite Supreme Court case is McLaurin v. Oklahoma States Regents for Higher Education.  He liked this case because of the role it played in highlighting the unconstitutionality of “separate but equal.”  Mr. Grabisch will pursue a career in civil rights litigation. 

Annaleigh Porter:

Ms Porter is a second year law student at Syracuse University College of Law.  She will receive her juris doctor degree in May 2010. She graduated magna cum lade from College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2006.  According to her professor, Ms Porter’s commitment to racial justice and the radical societal reconstruction necessary to achieve it is unwavering.   She intends to focus her post law school years on legal issues such as employment discrimination, housing discrimination and rights to legal defense. 

Malcolm Ruff:  

Mr. Ruff is a first year law student at the University of Baltimore, School of Law from which he will receive his juris doctor degree in 2011.  He obtained his undergraduate degree in African and African American Studies from Duke University in 2006.  He has taken classes in Civil Rights Movement from 1945-1968, Public Policy of Separation and Inclusion and New Directions in Racial Justice Litigation.  He is a two (2) term Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Parliamentarian and Co-Founder of Duke Black Male Outreach Mentoring Program.   Mr. Ruff is interested in pursuing fair housing and education issues.

Sahmra Stevenson-Smith:  

Ms Stevenson-Smith is currently enrolled in law school at American University, Washington College of Law.  Her expected graduation date is May 2010.  She graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and American Studies in 2005.  She served as an intern with Judge Gladys Kessler, United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. and as a litigation technology analyst with the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale & Dorr located in Boston, MA.  Ms. Stevenson-Smith is interested in Federal Civil Rights Law, Civil Rights Litigation and Appellate Advocacy and Youth Justice and Human Rights Education.
